Howd You Score That Gig Interview With Author Alexandra Levit

How’d You Score That Gig? â€" Interview with author Alexandra LevitThis is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesI’ve been a long-time admirer of Alexandra Levit through her blog, Water Cooler Wisdom. Alexandra previously published They Don’t Teach Corporate in College (ain’t that the truth…) and has now published another great book called How’d You Score That Gig?I have the great fortune of interviewing Alexandra about the book. Take a read…What’s the premise of How’d You Score That Gig?On the college recruiting scene, the story is always the same.   Despite a major that you thought was going to prepare you for a career in the real world, by the time y ou’re a senior you still have no idea what you want to do with your life.   You visit the campus career center and are introduced to a bevy of consulting and banking firms, Fortune 500 staples, and advertising and public relations agencies that employ the “creative” types.   You don’t want to go to graduate school right away and might not know what to go to graduate school for, so you interview for these jobs and inevitably accept one.But what if you could discover the hidden road, the one that would lead to an exciting, unique, and fulfilling line of work, the one taken by a select few who always get asked the question, “How’d you score THAT gig?”   I wanted to write the book that would help twenty and thirty-somethings discover that hidden road, and I wanted it to be more than just a directory that listed a bunch of jobs and some cursory details about each.   By taking a deep dive into the inner world of each of these professions, I was able to come out with the conc rete steps for turning unattainable dreams into money-making realities. How did you choose the cool jobs? How’d You Score That Gig? features 60 cool jobs, divided into seven categories based on the broad personality types that are generally best-suited to those jobs.   I selected the cool jobs via an online survey in which I asked nearly 500 twenty and thirty-somethings to tell me about their dream careers. Based on the responses, I generated a list of the top 60 careers and constructed a fairly comprehensive profile of each using the information I gathered from written sources and in-depth interviews with more than 100 individuals currently holding the jobs. Then, I researched various personality type measures to develop my seven “passion profiles” â€" adventurer, creator, data-head, entrepreneur, investigator, networker, and nurturer â€" and placed the 60 cool jobs into the appropriate categories.   In the first chapter, I designed an assessment (with help from my husband, whoâ €™s a psychologist) to help readers decide which passion profiles might be most appealing to them. What are some jobs you’d like to do personally?Well, I’ve done the book author and marketing exec jobs already, and I obviously enjoy both of those!     Other jobs that intrigue me are futurist (or people who study sociological and technological phenomena to predict what the future will hold), forensic scientist, travel journalist, and screenwriter. What do you hope readers will take away from the book? There are so many reference books out there that merely list cool jobs.   I hope that How’d You Score That Gig? will provide a true insider’s glimpse into each and every one of the careers I profile, and access to people just like you and me who are in a position to give realistic advice about getting job in each field.   I hope that by learning about their personality profiles and the corresponding interesting jobs, a whole new world of possibilities will be opened up to readers, and they will have the courage to take the first steps on the journey to career fulfillment. What’s your #1 piece of advice for people trying to score their dream gig?Finding a career that will fulfill you personally and professionally requires exploration, and a great deal of trial and error.   Throughout this process, it’s important to have realistic expectations of “dream careers.”   Although the individuals profiled in my book love their jobs, even they don’t believe there’s a such thing as the perfect work situation.   Every job has its ups and downs, and aspects we love and aspects we don’t love.   This is a hard, but necessary lesson that I had to learn when I succeeded in my dream job of being a book author!â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"Alexandra Levit is the founder and president of Inspiration @Work, a career consultancy. Defining who you are to land your dream job - Hallie Crawford

Defining who you are to land your dream job - Hallie Crawford Knowing your brand in order to land your dream job is a critical first step in your job search. So how do you know what it is? These steps can help you get started. Your branding statement can be a combination of many things, including: your skills, your work experience, how you stand out from your peers in your industry and your values.  The key is to have it committed to memory, not word for word, but embedded in your mind so you can use it, and any piece of it, at any time. Starting with your skills and work experience, review your resume, have a friend look at it with you to help you identify the skills and experience you have to offer a potential employer. Include traditional work experience and other experience as well-don’t discount what you’ve accomplished outside of work if it’s relevant! Working with a friend can be incredibly helpful. That second pair of eyes can be invaluable and help you pull things out you may otherwise miss. Make a list of these skills and experience on a separate sheet of paper. Next take a look at LinkedIn and review the profiles of local professionals in your industry and ask yourself, what skills or experience do I have that not everyone else does? How can I stand out from the crowd in my industry?  Review the profiles of at least 5-7 peers to identify your unique value proposition, what combination of skills and work experience you bring to an employer that most people don’t. And finally, be clear about your values and how these enhance your brand. Are you committed to continuous innovation? Interested in leaving a legacy behind in your work, meaning you want to be part of projects that have a lasting impact on an organization? Include these in your branding statement as well. They round out your skills and give an employer an additional perspective on who you are as a potential employee. It’s all about clearly defining the value you bring to a potential employer. To be able to do that, you must know yourself well and understand your brand inside and out. Hallie Crawford Certified Career Coach P.S. Follow Directions in Help Wanted Ads

Follow Directions in Help Wanted Ads When sending a resume to a potential client, it is important to make sure you follow the directions. This sounds fairly simple, but you would be shocked at how many prospective candidates do not follow directions and are simply eliminated from the pool of applicants because of their lack of attention to detail. First, if the ad says, “No walk-ins, please,” then please don’t show up at the place of business. This will immediately show the employer that you do not know how to follow directions. I once had someone do this at a former workplace and he was essentially eliminated as an employee because he couldn’t follow the directions in the advertisement. After all, if he couldn’t follow those directions, how could we expect him to follow management’s directions at work? Another tidbit: send everything the advertisement asks for from the applicant. If you need to send unofficial transcripts, a resume, application, and letters of reference, be sure to send everything in one packet. This increases the likelihood that everything will stay together and the employer will appreciate the organized package. Rememberâ€"every employer is different and job applying rules vary depending upon the company. Read the advertisement carefully and ensure you have everything you need to be considered for the open position. Following the directions in the advertisement is the first step to letting the employer know that you can be the employee the company is seeking.

The Smart Way to Change Careers

The Smart Way to Change Careers The world is full of under-utilized, under-challenged, creatively starving cube dwellers, just dying to break out of the box and kick butt. You: not satisfied in your current career path, and have a vague, but yet to be solidified, idea of what you would rather do instead and cant wait to make some type of transition to the greener career grass. I dont recommend jumping ship before you have an employment plan to back up that decision. I do recommend taking a hard look at all of your most valuable skill sets, whether theyre related or not, and seeing what kind of connection you can make that would allow you to transfer those skills successfully to another type of job. And maybe you already know what you do well, and what type of career you want to transition into. Now think about what skills you might be lacking, or need to improve upon, that are essential for that career path to open up its welcoming arms to you. Ive always been a fine artist, I thrive on being creative, and it would be amazing to do freelance work as a graphic designer. But Im not very well-versed in Illustrator, and my Photoshop chops are at best, pretty good. So theres a gap there between what I see myself doing, and what Im fully capable of marketing myself as. And that will be your biggest challenge in changing careers- successfully marketing yourself as a qualified candidate for the type of career role youre going after. If you lack tangible experience, its very difficult to persuade a hiring manager or an organization to invest a significant amount of money in hiring you, when theres very little professional measurement of your success in that field. People like to complain to me a lot of about how hard it is to change careers, and how no one will hire them, how many job apps theyve sent out, the hundreds of networking events theyve been to, etcetera, etcetera. What they forget is that they made the choice to do so, whether that choice was driven by dissatisfaction, desperation, passion, motivation, or unemployment. The process is not easy, and you will be up against everyone else in your field who DOES have tangible experience. But there are actions you can start taking, whether youve already jumped ship or are contemplating the dive, to effectively position yourself as a qualified candidate and professional asset to your field. And its not just about your resume. In fact, it has nothing to do with your resume, and everything to do with building your personal brand from scratch. VOLUNTEER OR INTERN A recent study conducted via LinkedIn shows that a majority of hiring managers actually value volunteer experience as highly as hands-on professional experience. Why? Because volunteer experience is STILL hands-on experience, sans a paycheck. I understand that not everyone has the capacity to work for free these days, but even squeezing in volunteer side gigs on an as-need basis every so often, qualifies as hands-on experience. And a big part of doing work for free is about the connections you make while doing it. CONSULT OR FREELANCE Similar to volunteering, what kinds of side projects can you take on to build a resume or portfolio to better position yourself for a full-time job? There are people out there who can utilize your services and would welcome the more cost-effective options of hiring a talented and reliable entry-level professional who can still get the job done, and also save them money in the process. MEET PEOPLE WHO HAVE INFLUENCE Advising you to go out and network is nothing you dont already know. Network, network, and then network some more, but the key is to mingle with and converse with the right kinds of people. Dont bother with the general job seeker networking events that cater to any and every industry youre mostly going to meet other job seekers and career changers. And while that is fine, you will have the best luck if you target events that are specifically geared toward the industry youre looking to break into. This gives you the opportunity to not just meet potential colleagues, but to talk to people about different trends and skills that helped them get to where they are, and that they consider important for breaking into the field. SHARE, DISCUSS AND PROMOTE YOUR KNOW-HOW If you cant rely on tangible experience, then get out there and promote your creative and insightful ideas. Blogging (and commenting on other peoples blogs) is a great way to showcase your interest and expertise in a field and connect with others who share the same professional interest. Content sharing sites like StumbleUpon and Digg are great for sharing interesting articles, while QA sites like Quora allow you to provide your insight and feedback to questions that your peers have about topics in your field. Another great thought leadership tool is the Groups functionality on LinkedIn, where you can participate in discussions, share article links and pose questions to others in your field. Taking advantage of the appropriate social media and thought leadership vehicles allows you to strategically build your network, gain visibility in your target industry, and position yourself as somewhat of a subject matter expert in your field. STREAMLINE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE In short, keep the non-professional content to an absolute minimum, and have a uniform presence across all of your social media profiles to best support your brand. Dont just talk about how youre looking to break into your field or are looking for a job in XYZ. Brand yourself by discussing your professional interests and promoting your credibility. Creating a uniform presence across a couple of different social media vehicles such as LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Digg can also be beneficial to your Google ranking. Studies show that the typical Gen Y young professional will change careers four times before the age of 30. We are discovering and building new skill sets, and opening doors for ourselves in career paths we never considered before. This is not uncommon, it is challenging, and it is also possible. I myself have conquered the career change challenge more than once, and believe you me, you are no exception to the possibility. Its all about having the drive and motivation to essentially build a new brand from scratch because like building a small business, that is what you are doing when you talk about reinventing yourself. Focus on formulating a good strategy that works off of your most marketable skill sets, finding a relevant need to which your skills speak, and continuing to learn new skills that will open up doors and relationships. What is Gen Zs Attitude Towards Their Future Careers Employer branding experts, Universum have recently released the findings of a survey they conducted investigating the attitudes that young people (born between 1996 and 2000) have towards their future careers, fears about work and thoughts about higher education. Gen Z are the most digital savvy generation yet and are the first to have grown up their entire lives with easy access to information and a means of communicating online. Their confidence with technology empowers them and broadens their  knowledge on the world and the options available to them. Though most of them are still in school, they will make up a large portion of our workforce in the not so distant future. So how can employers go about attracting this group  who feel like anything is possible and have such a keen interest in entrepreneurship and what do these individuals expect of their careers? Optimistic spirit: 65% are hopeful about the future; however they are less optimistic about their standard of living that Gen Y. Just over half of Gen Z believe they will surpass that of their parents, compared to 71% of Gen Y. How will employers support the optimism and creativity that runs through this generation?   Values at work: 36%  fear they won’t find a job that matches their personality.   35% are worried that they will get stuck with no development opportunities. A further 28% are concerned that they wont realise  their own career goals. Three Secrets To Promoting Your Next Conference Talk - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Three Secrets To Promoting Your Next Conference Talk - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Speaking at a conference can sometimes be a hit or miss affair. You agonize over your slides and practice your talk, only to find that out of the 300 attendees, 10 of them are in your session. Hardly seems worth the effort. But other times, you find that you get more than half the people at the conference at your event, and youre on top of the world. Increase your audience How do you get more people to show up at your breakout session? How do you beat the other speakers, who you say youre not competing with, but secretly want to crush by stealing all of their attendees? Here are three techniques I have used in the past to increase the attendance at my own conference breakout sessions. 1. Pick a topic and level that slightly exceeds the abilities of the attendees. You wouldnt go to a social media conference and offer Social Media 101. And you wouldnt go to a small business conference and offer advanced search engine optimization techniques. Instead, figure out where your audience is, and then go just a little bit higher. Speaking at a blogging conference? Talk about the newest Google Panda/Penguin changes. Going to a marketing conference? Talk about the new developments in mobile marketing. Your audience doesnt want material thats beneath them, and they dont want to be reminded of things they already know. They want to be challenged, but not have everything go so far over their head they dont understand a word of it. Pick an interesting, trending topic and give them new knowledge. 2. Write the session title and description like a sales letter. What attracted you to read this post? If youre like most readers, it was the secrets. A lot of my breakout sessions offer a finite number of secrets, because I know most people dig that kind of stuff, and its guaranteed to give me a boost. Google some examples of interesting sales letters, and incorporate some of their techniques, like using bullet points to tell people the highlights of what theyll learn: Learn how to pick a topic that inspires conference attendees. Discover which social media tools can help you reach a broader audience. Learn how bullet points can help increase session attendance. Get the picture? Also get one or two of Dan Kennedys books on copywriting, especially sales letters, and incorporate a couple of those ideas into the description. After all, your description is basically a sales letter that gets people to show up in the first place. 3. Use Twitter to meet conference attendees. I once managed to bring half of a regional conference to my breakout session, because for a month beforehand, I started promoting it to people who would be attending. But best of all, I did it without advertising or promoting the talk. Heres how I did it. Use Twellowhood.com to identify people who lived in the cities around the conference area, and follow them. Use a search column on TweetDeck to identify the hashtag for the conference. Since this was a popular one, people were talking about it a month before. I followed these people too. I scouted the conference website and started following the people who were also speaking. I introduced myself to the people I started following. Occasionally I would mention that I had a session at the conference, and asked them to stop by after it was over. I participated in conversations with the conference attendees, getting to know them, and letting them get to know me. Again, I would ask them to say hi after my session. I eventually turned the hashtag into a Twitter list for that community, and still follow it to this day, because I have returned to that conference, and the city, a few more times. Those are just three basic ways to increase your conference session attendance. Which of those have you used in the past? Which ones work best for you? Leave a comment and let me hear from you. Defeat Your Anxiety Monsters with 5 (Seriously!) Easy Tips  - Classy Career Girl

Defeat Your Anxiety Monsters with 5  (Seriously!)  Easy Tips   Anxiety can sometimes feel like a slithering, slimy, black monster growling in the back of our minds non-stop, every day, bickering away at all our fears, insanities, and insecurities. For some, anxiety shows up only during stressful times. For others, anxiety turns into a disorder that traps them in permanent fear and depression. For many who continue to live with anxiety for decades begin to believe alleviation can’t exist. Biologically, anxiety is our body’s way of signaling, “Hey! Watch out, there’s danger ahead!” So, from an evolutionary standpoint, this explains anxiety’s positive role when our ancestor Homo sapiens were escaping wild bobcats in the forest. Yet, where does anxiety come from today? Although we are no longer battling beasts on bare grounds, we are managing threats that can doom our wellbeing, like stressful careers, unloving relationships, toxic people, and social media overloads. Thus, certain factors can trigger anxiety monsters unexpectedly, even when no real signs of danger exist. But, for all classy career girls out there, start believing that you can empower yourself to better health. As a writer who has dealt with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I know the troubles it can cause. Now, I’ve mastered 5 tips to live a happier, calmer, and more beautiful life and you can too! Defeat Your Anxiety Monsters with 5  (Seriously!)  Easy Tips   1. Spot Your Unique Anxiety Triggers Having trouble concentrating or sleeping? Can’t seem to attend social events without an underlying fear? Struggling with stress or panic attacks? Public speaking and work events causing immense nervousness? The list of triggers will be person dependent, so only you can determine what yours are. Yet, recognizing these triggers can help you access the right type of support. Start by logging moments on your phone as anxiety spurs up or journaling daily to promote inner-reflection. Taking this step will automatically bring you some relief because now you’ve pinpointed your triggers. 2. Schedule in Some Self-Soothing Life can be overwhelming sometimes, especially if you’re juggling a career, family, and self-care. Ultimately though, self-care is significant in transitioning you into a more self-loving person. If you don’t soothe yourself, how will you strongly support your family, tackle work deadlines, and live a beautiful life? Often, we consume ourselves with to-dos and forget that part of living authentically includes scheduling in some good ol’ fun. For example, gardening, yoga, painting, taking 15-minute walks in nature, crafting, or scheduling beach trips. Take a few minutes now to list out what you sincerely enjoy. By scheduling in even 30 minutes per day to nurture your wants and feel-good activities, you will start to see a dramatic decrease in your stress levels. 3.  Prioritize Yourself Attending a birthday party of a friend’s friend, because you don’t want to make a bad impression? Wearing shoes that hurt your feet tremendously only because they’re the new trend? Often, we put our needs on hold for kooky and unjust reasons, like catering to fashion trends that discomfort us, attending events we despise or rescuing unsupportive, flaky friends. Then, we come home exhausted, eating bowls of ice-cream in our pajamas, daydreaming a Hawaii rendezvous. Start asking yourself today what-to-dos or events on your calendar are there due to obligation or society norms? Are there even two agendas you can recognize that don’t align with your morals or interests? Can you cancel them? Essentially, it’s about creating healthy boundaries and prioritizing yourself first. Starting today, focus on what makes you happy. [RELATED: Try These 5 Tips To Reduce Depression And Anxiety] 4.  Choose Kind People Toxic people can be gossipy coworkers, uncaring friends or disrespectful family members. Thus, try limiting your interactions with anyone who deflates your inner badass, amazing self. Give yourself permission to reject friendships that aren’t for your greater good or civilly request desk changes to your manager if you’ve been placed next to a nasty coworker. The more you opt-in for mutually respectful and caring relationships, the calmer you’ll feel inside. 5.  Ask for Support As humans, we cannot always be our own healers. Our friends and family may also be limited in the emotional or psychological support they can provide. Thus, it is important to seek professional help if you’re finding yourself in a bit of rut. You may even encounter solutions you never thought existed. Remember, never be ashamed of your bliss-seeking journey despite stigmas associated with mental health. If you’ve cared enough to take healthy steps to improve your life, you’re a much stronger person than you know.
